The American empire has peaked βand we are on the way downβ¦ and we try to hold onβ, says Richard Wolff, professor emeritus of economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, who notes that the BRICS coalition of economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) is gaining an edge over the United States.
Wolff tells host Steve Clemons that itβs βa very difficult experience for Americansβ to realise that they lost wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. And despite unconditional support from the US, Israel will not be able to prevail in the long run.
βIsrael is a country of a few million people and is not going to control and run the Middle East β¦ with or without the United States,β argues Wolff.

In 2023, BRICS extended invitations to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates after these countries applied for membership. Saudi Arabia has yet to formally join, but the others have.
An invitation was extended to Argentina at the same time, but the South American country turned it down after President Javier Milei, elected in December, campaigned on the promise that he would bolster ties with the West.

The objective of this reserve is to provide protection against global liquidity pressures.Β This includes currency issues where members' national currencies are being adversely affected by global financial pressures.The CRA is generally seen as a competitor to theΒ International Monetary FundΒ (IMF) and along with theΒ New Development BankΒ is viewed as an example of increasingΒ South-South cooperation.
BRICS PAYΒ orΒ BRICS PayΒ is a decentralised and independent payment messaging mechanism system under development by theΒ BRICSΒ member states. It is similar to Europe'sΒ SWIFTΒ and India'sΒ Unified Payments Interface. The project is a joint venture between the BRICS states to receive and make payments in their own local currencies. The venture was launched in 2018 by the BRICS Business Council.

The potential BRICS currency would allow these nations to assert their economic independence while competing with the existing international financial system. The current system is dominated by the US dollar, which accounts for about 90 percent of all currency trading. Until recently, nearly 100 percent of oil trading was conducted in US dollars; however, in 2023 one-fifth of oil trades were reportedly made using non-US dollar currencies.

I also very much appreciated Steve Clemons' interviews with the esteemed Richard Wolff on the BRICS Alliance, and in a linked video, with Adikan Chom Boriqua, former African Union Ambassador to the US, on the US offering Africa seats on the UN Security Council (without VETO power!), on THE BOTTOM LINE on Al Jazeera. Wolff is extremely well-informed, and Boriqua is nothing short of brilliant in her passionate and very compelling comments about Africa, the UN, and the state of the world. She is truly outstanding and articulate - very much worth hearing! Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen, in her remarks at a Press Conference Ahead of the 2024 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, is still lying her ass off (as is typical for the mouthpieces of empire).
