Israel wants to restrict the number of Palestinians entering Gaza through the border crossing with Egypt to ensure that more are allowed out than in, three sources briefed on the matter said ahead of the borderβs expected opening next week.
The head of a transitional Palestinian committee backed by the U.S. to temporarily administer Gaza, Ali Shaath, announced on Thursday that the Rafah Border Crossing - effectively the sole route in or out of Gaza for nearly all of the more than 2 million people who live there - would open next week.
The border was supposed to have opened during the initial phase of President Donald Trumpβs plan to end the war, under a ceasefire reached in October between Israel and Hamas.
Earlier this month, Washington announced that the plan had now moved into the second phase, under which Israel is expected to withdraw troops further from Gaza and Hamas is due to yield control of the territoryβs administration. The Gaza side of the crossing has been under Israeli military control since 2024.

When the Gaza war began, Ismail Abu Naji was just 18 months old, his small body covered in swollen, bleeding lesions. Months earlier, doctors had diagnosed him with a rare blood cancer, one that, if untreated, is often a death sentence.
In the weeks before the war, Ismailβs family had arranged for him to be transferred to Al-Makassed hospital in Jerusalem, a charitable institution for Palestinians, for specialised care. But the blockade Israel imposed on Gaza after Hamasβs 7 October 2023 attack that triggered the conflict meant Ismail could not leave the territory.
He is now one of thousands of cancer patients in Gaza who the UN says require medical evacuation for urgent treatment.
The Guardian has spoken to dozens of Palestinian cancer patients trapped in Gaza, where doctors say cancer-related deaths have tripled since the war began, as Israel continues to hinder patients from leaving and restricts the entry of chemotherapy drugs. While some patients have left, they are far outnumbered by those deemed in medical need who have not. The Israeli NGO Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI) says evacuation routes to third countries have become βnear impossibleβ to operate, especially since the closure of the Rafah crossing in May 2024, and that Israel is failing to meet its obligation to provide medical care to populations under its control. The crossing between Gaza and Egypt is due to open for traffic next week, the Palestinian technocratic committee leader, Ali Shaath, said on Thursday, although Israel did not immediately confirm that would be the case.

A prominent Saudi Arabian academic has accused the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of throwing itself βinto the arms of Zionismβ and functioning as βIsraelβs Trojan horse in the Arab worldβ in order to weaken Saudi Arabia and emerge as a dominant regional power.
In a scathing column published on Thursday in the Saudi newspaper Al Jazirah, Ahmed bin Othman al-Tuwaijri accused leaders in the oil-rich emirate of Abu Dhabi of being βblindedβ by βhatred and jealousyβ and of turning against the kingdom despite decades of Saudi support.
Tuwaijri, a former dean at King Saud University and a former Shura Council member, singled out the emirate of Abu Dhabi for criticism, saying it was pursuing βhostile plots under the guise of diplomacyβ and was behind several attempts to destabilise the region.
The Shura Council is a consultative, legislative body that advises the king on laws, policies and governance, with echoes of the traditional Majlis in Arab society.
Framing the emirateβs actions as both ideological and existential threats, Tuwaijri said that the UAE, which is governed by Mohammed bin Zayed - a staunch opponent of political Islam - had collaborated with Israel to the detriment of Arab interests. Zayed is also the crown prince of Abu Dhabi.

That board of "peace" accurately sums up how inadequate and farcical the actual "board of peace" in our world is. I'd say, despite all the wrong that Darth Vader, Voldemort, the Joker etc. did, the genocidal war criminals in our world on that board are worse. I pray for better days ahead soon for those suffering this horrific genocide in Palestine and Sudan and across the world iA
What a powerful poem at the end. It's hard to fathom how anyone can not pay attention when this 'never again' genocide is being committed and supported by the elites of our countries.
I can't imagine what the kids in Palestine must be going through, and it breaks my heart, Najwan. Kids are so vulnerable, and the trauma is unimaginable.
Take care, as always, Najwan. I hope you sleep well, and we'll write and fight another day.
