TWO HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH (HRW) EMPLOYEES who make up the organization’s entire Israel and Palestine team are stepping down from their positions after leadership blocked a report that deems Israel’s denial of Palestinian refugees’ right of return a “crime against humanity.”

In separate resignation letters obtained by Jewish Currents, Omar Shakir, who has headed the team for nearly the last decade, and Milena Ansari, the team’s assistant researcher, said leadership’s decision to pull the report before its scheduled publication on December 4th broke from HRW’s customary approval processes and was evidence that the organization was putting fear of political backlash over a commitment to international law. “I have lost my faith in the integrity of how we do our work and our commitment to principled reporting on the facts and application of the law,” wrote Shakir in his resignation letter. “As such, I am no longer able to represent or work for Human Rights Watch.”

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has warned of serious health and environmental risks after Israeli forces dispersed an “unknown chemical substance” over areas near the Blue Line in southern Lebanon, forcing the suspension of peacekeeping operations for several hours.

In a statement posted on X on Monday, UNIFIL said Israeli forces notified the mission early on Sunday of a planned aerial operation involving the dispersal of a chemical substance near the UN-demarcated line marking Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000.

According to UNIFIL, Israeli forces instructed peacekeepers to withdraw from the area and remain under cover, leading to the cancellation of more than a dozen field activities.

“Peacekeepers could not perform normal operations near the Blue Line along about a third of its length and were only able to resume normal activities after over nine hours,” the statement said.

UNIFIL added that it supported the Lebanese army in collecting samples from affected areas for toxicity testing, after Israeli forces asserted that the substance was non-toxic.

These names of two children mark the beginning and end of the Wall of Tears, a massive art installation paying homage to the 18,457 children killed in Gaza between 7 October 2023 and 19 July 2025. Created by artist Phil Buehler, it opened next to Pine Box Rock Shop bar at 12 Grattan Street in Brooklyn, New York, on Thursday.

Made of waterproof and UV-coated vinyl, the 50ft long, 10ft tall sand-coloured mural lists the children killed in Gaza by the order in which they died, based on data from the Gaza health ministry. This will be punctuated by photos and stories of individual children, drawing on reports by the Guardian and Washington Post newspapers.

“If you approach from a distance, it looks like almost an abstract painting and that draws people in to see, what is that?” Buehler, 69, says by phone. “Then you’ll see they’re names of the children killed in Gaza since 7 October and there are thousands of them stretching down the block.

“Then you’ll be drawn in further, I hope, to see the faces, read the stories of some of the few dozen I’ve scattered throughout the fence. That’s the part that gets me when I look at it. You see these faces full of joy and hope, snapshots from graduations and birthday parties and family gatherings and knowing that these kids’ lives were just cut short.”

A US disaster response firm submitted a plan to White House officials that would guarantee 300% profits and a seven-year monopoly over a new trucking and logistics plan for Donald Trump’s Board of Peace in Gaza, according to a November proposal obtained by the Guardian.

The draft plan from Gothams LLC would allow it to collect a fee for every truck moving goods into Gaza, and charge for the use of its warehousing and distribution system.

The Guardian first reported in December that Gothams was the frontrunner for a lucrative deal that would be doled out by a future Trump-chaired Board of Peace, but the scale of the profit margin was not clear.
