CNN political commentator Van Jones has apologised for remarks he made on HBO’s Overtime with Bill Maher after drawing backlash for appearing to joke about images of children in Gaza killed by Israel’s genocide.

On the programme, Jones argued that younger audiences view Israel differently because of what he described as a “massive disinformation campaign” run by “Iran and Qatar” on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“If you are a young person, you open up your phone, and all you see is dead Gaza baby, dead Gaza baby, dead Gaza baby. That’s basically your own feed,” he said during the show.

Omar Suleiman, a prominent Muslim American scholar and activist, called the remarks “truly disgraceful and vile” in a post on X.

“I’m sorry dead Gaza babies bother you so much. Maybe tell the people paying you to put lipstick on a genocide to stop killing them,” Suleiman wrote.

“Milena, I wonder if we can quickly draw attention to the detaining of children, Ubai as well, because I think this is probably one of the most stark and shocking examples of the use of Israeli authority to impose their will upon the most vulnerable in Palestinian society. But according to the Israeli Prison Service, the number of children currently in administrative detention reached an all time high in Israel this year. Those who have gone through the process, some of them in their early teens, talk of being stripped and interrogated.

In many cases, Palestinian children held in administrative detention go weeks without seeing a lawyer. Ubai, how and why is Israel able to detain so many children?

I would like to remind everyone that when DCIP, the Palestinian Defense for Children International, Palestine, raised a case with the US. State Department, a documented case of raping a child by Israeli prison services or under the custody of Israeli prison services, the Israeli response was to raid DCIP offices and BISEM offices and declare the organizations as terrorist organizations.

So, what we are seeing is part of a systematic policy. And you can hear it actually even in some Israeli political circles talking live on television saying that we should target Palestinian children because they will grow up and become terrorists. This dehumanizing rhetoric is not actually far away from Israeli mainstream discussions and mainstream television and media.

Saleh Aljafarawi, a well-known social media influencer affiliated with Hamas known as “Mr. FAFO”, was killed by an anti-Hamas militia in the Sabra neighborhood in southern Gaza City, Hamas’s Al-Aqsa TV confirmed on Sunday.

According to reports, Aljafarawi — one of the most prominent pro-Hamas voices online in the Gaza Strip — was found shot in the head.

The influencer had gained global attention for his viral videos from Gaza, frequently appearing in clips even after being falsely reported dead. On several occasions, he filmed himself from hospital beds after reportedly surviving attacks.

Additional reports from the Gaza Strip said that the son of Bassem Naim, a senior Hamas official in the group’s political bureau, was also killed during violent clashes with the Doghmush clan in Gaza City.
