In Gaza, the war is creating a new generation of deaf children
According to a survey by a local non-profit organization, 35,000 children and adults have partially or completely lost their hearing during the two years of war that followed the Hamas attack in October 2023.
No one in the Abou Amro family knows sign language. To communicate with 12-year-old Dana, who has become deaf, her desperate parents have resorted to shouting. Only Alina, her 4-year-old little sister, has managed to connect with her by speaking directly into her ear. βAlina has become our interpreter. Otherwise, we have no way of understanding Danaβs needs. It is a tremendous suffering,β said their father, Ziad, age 52, reached by phone. Israel still bans journalists from entering the Gaza Strip.
Dana was not born deaf. In early September, she was resting in her room in Gaza City when the building just across from hers was hit by Israeli missiles. βThe explosion was extremely violent, the door to her room was torn off and the windows were blown out,β her father recounted.
The young girl survived, but in the days that followed, her family noticed a change in her behavior: Dana no longer reacted as before, no longer understood when she was spoken to. Her parents took her to consult specialists from the Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children, a pioneering organization that has operated in Gaza since 1992 and whose 132 employees have not stopped working, despite the destruction of the groupβs main center in the enclave. βBecause of the power of the explosion, the auditory nerve was severely damaged, perhaps even completely destroyed. Dana is suffering from a very severe hearing lossβ

Parched: Israelβs policy of water deprivation in the West Bank
The Israeli apartheid regime works to promote and perpetuate Jewish supremacy in the entire area it controls from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, through land and immigration policies, movement restrictions and β as this report shows β management of water resources. Within this single water sector, the regime deliberately creates a huge disparity in consumption. One group enjoys the luxuries afforded by a first-world water superpower, its lifestyle effectively impervious to weather conditions and climate change. The other β Palestinian subjects β suffers a chronic water crisis that stands to grow along with climate change.
This policy clearly demonstrates the profound dehumanization Palestinians have undergone in Israeli society β a process that has enabled Israel to use the most basic of resources as a means of control and achieving political goals, even at the cost of keeping millions of people thirsty. This dehumanization also enables the systemic, cruel campaign to deprive the most vulnerable Palestinian communities in the hottest, most arid parts of the West Bank of their water sources, even in the blistering heat of summer, so Israel can rob them of what little possessions and land they have left and take over as much territory as possible, all in order to continue its settlement project and the dispossession of Palestinians.
These figures indicate a severe water crisis among Palestinians in the West Bank. The shortage is not the result of fate or of a natural disaster, nor is it part of an unavoidable regional water crisis. Instead, it is an intentional outcome of Israelβs deliberately discriminatory policy, which views water as another means for controlling the Palestinian population in the West Bank.
Israel justifies this policy by citing the arrangements laid out in the Interim Agreement it signed with the PLO in 1995. However, that agreement was supposed to be in effect for five years only, and its provisions in no way reflect current reality in the West Bank. First, since 1995, the Palestinian population has grown by about 75%, yet the amount of water Israel allows the Palestinians to extract remain the same. To make up for the shortage, the Palestinian Authority is forced to purchase water from the national Israeli water company, Mekorot, at several times the cost. In total, Palestinians in the West Bank consumed 239 million cubic meters (mcm) of water in 2020, 77.1 of them purchased from Israel and then distributed unequally throughout the West Bank.

But the,
knowledge,
WE. CAN.
change this,
WHY. WONβT.
we..
change this?

Kids shouldn't have to live with bombs going off around them, becoming deaf, losing limbs, losing lives...
The powers that be want us all of us who object to the genocide they're committing to just shut up.
Every violence, every unfairness goes to Palestine, and to those who support Palestine.
How did this horrible cult gain so much power? How can we get it back?
We can never forget this, and can never allow anything like this to happen again.
Najwan, take good care, my friend. I wish things were different.

Shukran dear Najwan, what our children have been through is beyond comprehension. In Palestine, children grow before their time. For me personally, the most painful thing throughout the whole time here has always been the suffering of children and I have always put rescuing and helping them as priority when engaged in rescue operations. Inn Shaa Allah situation changes in Gaza and children get to receive all the support and help they need.
Everyone here is sending love and prayers your way.
Please stay strong dear Najwan, Allah Yebarek Feekee,
Salute
