Israelโs death penalty law targeting Palestinians became fully operational on Sunday evening and was extended to the occupied West Bank following an order signed by Israelโs Central Command chief, Major General Avi Bluth.
The move has triggered outrage among Palestinian rights groups and legal experts, who say the law entrenches apartheid and places executions within Israelโs military rule over Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir celebrated the law taking effect, declaring: โWe promised and we fulfilled.โ
The order follows the passage of the law in Israelโs parliament in March, when 62 Knesset members voted in favour of introducing the death penalty for Palestinians accused under Israelโs terrorism laws, sparking international condemnation.
โSo far, there is still no clear timeline for the actual implementation. However, what is dangerous is that the matter has now moved into the framework of military rule and military courts in the West Bank, meaning that the death penalty is being carried out within the logic of colonial military judiciary, not merely as a political debate inside Israel,โ Shadi Shurafa, researcher in Israeli affairs, told The New Arab.

Israeli forces on Tuesday intercepted all remaining vessels from an activist flotilla attempting to challenge Israelโs naval blockade of Gaza, the latest effort to highlight the grim conditions for nearly 2 million Palestinians with severe shortages of housing, food and medicine.
A live feed on the Global Sumud Flotilla website showed armed Israeli soldiers boarding the vessels as activists in life vests put their hands up. Soldiers then destroyed cameras mounted on the vessels.
Italyโs Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called for an urgent review of Israelโs use of force after Italian activists said soldiers fired rubber bullets at vessels. Flotilla organizers claimed Israeli soldiers fired on five boats during the interdictions, with some damage.
Israelโs Foreign Ministry said that no live ammunition was fired. In a statement late Tuesday, it added that โnon-lethal meansโ were aimed toward the vessels as a warning, but without targeting or injuring protesters.
That capital punishment law is so despicable! It has to be illegal, since it's in the context of a frickin' genocide.
