At least 93 Palestinians were killed when an Israeli attack flattened a five-storey residential building housing displaced people in northern Gaza’s Beit Lahiya on Tuesday, the head of Gaza’s Government Media Office said.

Israel's parliament has passed a bill banning the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. Israel has repeatedly targeted UNWRA, during its war on Gaza. The UN Secretary general says the move could have devastating consequences for Palestinian refugees.

The Security Council held its quarterly open debate today on “The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question” (MEPQ) today (my personal favorite man-made question)

Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland Ignazio Cassis chaired. And Norway's Special Representative to the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland briefed the circle as guest speaker..

“Last week, I was again in the Gaza Strip and what I witnessed defies imagination.  

In the southern part of the Strip, I saw the sheer magnitude of the devastation this war has inflicted on the population. I saw the immense destruction – of residential buildings, roads, hospitals, and schools. I saw thousands living in makeshift tents, with nowhere else to go as winter is approaching. Let me add, Mr President, anecdotally, that on the way from the crossing into Gaza up to the Japanese health compound, I could only count two buildings that were not totally or partly destroyed.

I spoke to our UN colleagues and their humanitarian partners, who face increasing challenges in their tireless efforts to deliver vital assistance. They described the dire humanitarian situation in northern Gaza, which has received virtually no humanitarian assistance since the start of October.”

Mariam Shahin has been making films about Gaza for over thirty years. She’s also made many documentaries and short films for Al Jazeera English since it launched in 2006. When she moved to Gaza in 2005, she felt a powerful sense of optimism following the Israeli withdrawal. But by 2009, war had badly damaged its infrastructure, neighbourhoods, businesses and communities – and that optimism had evaporated.

Now, in the wake of the even more destructive war that began on 7th October 2023, Mariam seeks out the people she has met in Gaza over the years – and reflects on the wasted potential and devastated lives after sixteen years of blockade and a year of one of the most destructive wars in Middle East history.
