Today (April 17 2024) marks #PalestinianPrisonersDay… I know… Our 🇵🇸 joyful commemorations and all…
Celebrated annually, this day was adopted in 1974 for the united liberation of Palestinian detainees held in Israeli prisons and detention centers.
The April date marks the first release of a Palestinian prisoner, Mahmoud Bakr Hijazi.
Hijazi, who had been serving a 30-year prison sentence on charges of trying to blow up the Nehusha Water Institute in central Israel in 1965, was released by Israel in exchange for a 59-year-old Israeli guard named Shmuel Rozenvasser.

NGO Addameer showcased similar stats on today’s dire reminder…
https://www.addameer.org/statistics Addameer, (Arabic: الضمير, meaning "Conscience"), officially Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, is a Palestinian NGO based in Ramallah. It monitors the treatment of Palestinian prisoners arrested in the West Bank by Israel and the Palestinian Authority and provides legal assistance.

A recent probe via Gaza-based NGO Al-Mezan الميزان depicted the following…
Based on its firsthand documentation and available information, Al Mezan has estimated that around 1,650 Palestinian residents of Gaza are interned in Israeli prisons under the Unlawful Combatants Law. This figure represents a substantial increase compared to previous reports. These detainees are held in total isolation from the outside world at Nafha and Negev (Ketziot) prisons. A ruling from the Israeli judiciary prohibits the release of information about them, and they are denied the right to appoint lawyers or receive legal representation.
And further marking 2024’s occurrence, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights published a few Palestinian prisoner testimonies 💔
Final note, I remind us of a news story that promptly (and popularly) circulated socials and news feeds earlier in the month…
“Just this week, two prisoners had their legs amputated due to handcuff injuries, which unfortunately is a routine event,” the doctor said in the letter, according to the Haaretz report on Thursday. He wrote that inappropriate care at the detention facility has led to “complications and sometimes even in the patient’s death,” adding that “this makes all of us – the medical teams and you, those in charge of us in the health and defense ministries, complicit in the violation of Israeli law.”
