The U.S. military has depleted much of its inventory of advanced missile-defense interceptors after expending far more high-end munitions defending Israel amid hostilities with Iran than Israeli forces used themselves, according to Defense Department assessments described to The Post.
The U.S. launched more than 200 Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, interceptors in defense of Israel - roughly half of the Pentagon’s total inventory - along with more than 100 Standard Missile-3 and Standard Missile-6 interceptors fired from naval vessels in the eastern Mediterranean, said U.S. officials. By contrast, Israel fired fewer than 100 of its Arrow interceptors and around 90 David’s Sling interceptors, some of which were used against less sophisticated projectiles fired by Iran-backed groups in Yemen and Lebanon.
Military analysts said the data described to The Post offers a rare window into how the U.S. and Israel work together.
“The numbers are striking,” said Kelly Grieco, a senior fellow at the Stimson Center. “The United States absorbed most of the missile defense mission while Israel conserved its own magazines. Even if the operational logic was sound, the United States is left with roughly 200 THAAD interceptors and a production line that can’t keep pace with demand.”
U.S. and Israeli officials routinely tout their close cooperation and the strength of Israel’s multilayered air-defense system. But the Defense Department assessments suggest a more lopsided dynamic.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche signed an order Tuesday that leaves the IRS “forever barred” from examining President Trump’s prior tax returns.
The memo prohibits the IRS from pursuing claims against Trump, his family or his businesses, saying the agency “releases, waives, acquits” its pending action and is “forever barred and precluded” from pursuing claims against the president.
The document comes after the Justice Department and Trump moved to voluntarily dismiss a $10 billion lawsuit against the agency for leaking his tax returns. In exchange, the Justice Department created a $1.776 billion “anti-weaponization fund” to compensate individuals who allege they’ve been unfairly treated by previous administrations.
In seeking to voluntarily dismiss the case, the parties are sidestepping a federal judge who had asked Trump and the Justice Department to explain whether they were truly adversaries, as required is required to bring a case.
The single-page document says the tax agency will not be allowed to probe any of Trump’s ”tax returns filed before the effective date” of Monday’s settlement agreement for any “presently known or unknown” claims.
