On Friday, the UN special rapporteur on health used a new term – medicide – to describe the widespread and systematic attacks by Israel on healthcare workers and facilities.

Gaza’s Health Ministry stated that all detained medical personnel were held by the Israeli military without access to food or water. According to the ministry, three nurses were injured, and three ambulances were destroyed.

Among those taken was Mohamed Obeid, head of the orthopaedics department at Al-Awda Hospital nearby, though his current location remains unknown, according to the hospital.

In recent days, we have heard shocking reports of mass killings and sexual violence in villages in Aj Jazirah State in the east of the country.

They are also enduring a nightmare of hunger — as more than 750,000 people face catastrophic food insecurity and famine conditions take hold in displacement sites in North Darfur, while millions struggle to feed themselves every day. They are confronting a nightmare of disease — with cholera, malaria, dengue fever, measles and rubella spreading fast.

A nightmare of collapsed infrastructure — with vital health systems, transportation networks, water and sanitation systems, supply routes and agricultural production grinding to a halt.

A nightmare of displacement — the largest displacement crisis in the world, with more than 11 million people fleeing since April last year, including nearly 3 million who have crossed into neighbouring countries.

A nightmare of extreme weather — with nearly 600,000 people affected by heavy rains and floods this summer.

This afternoon (28 October), the Security Council will convene for an emergency meeting on the airstrikes that Israel launched against Iran on 25 October. The meeting, which will be held under the agenda item “The situation in the Middle East”, was requested by Iran, supported by Algeria, China, and Russia. Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific Mohamed Khaled Khiari is expected to brief.

The Israeli strikes were concentrated in the Iranian provinces of Tehran, Ilam, and Khuzestan and hit approximately 20 targets, which reportedly comprised Iranian missile manufacturing facilities as well as air defense systems protecting the country’s energy infrastructure, including oil refineries, a gas field, and a port. Prior to the operation, the US had reportedly urged Israel not to directly target Iranian energy or nuclear facilities out of concern that doing so could trigger a full-scale conflict between the countries. Four Iranian military personnel were killed in the strikes, according to the Iranian authorities.
