The resolution spearheaded by Ghana received 123 votes in favour. Three countries β Argentina, Israel and the United States β voted against and 52 abstained.
βToday, we come together in solemn solidarity to affirm truth and pursue a route to healing and reparative justice,β said Ghanaβs President John Dramani Mahama, speaking ahead of the vote on behalf of the 54-member African Group β the largest regional bloc at the UN.
For more than 400 years, millions of people were stolen from Africa, put in shackles and shipped to the New World to toil in cotton fields and sugar and coffee plantations under scorching heat and the crack of the whip.
Denied their basic humanity and even their own names, they were forced to endure generations of exploitation with repercussions that reverberate today including persistent anti-Black racism and discrimination.
The resolution emphasised βthe trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialised chattel enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity by reason of the definitive break in world history, scale, duration, systemic nature, brutality and enduring consequences that continue to structure the lives of all people through racialized regimes of labour, property and capital.β
It affirmed the importance of addressing historical wrongs affecting Africans and people of the diaspora in a manner that promotes justice, human rights, dignity and healing, while emphasising that claims for reparations represent a concrete step towards remedy.β― β―
The text was βhighly problematic in countless respects,β Ambassador Dan Negrea, US representative to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), said prior to the vote.
He regretted that Washington βmust once again remind this body that the United Nations exists to maintain international peace and securityβ and βwas not founded to advance narrow specific interests and agendas, to establish niche International Days, or to create new costly meeting and reporting mandates.β
Furthermore, the US βdoes not recognise a legal right to reparations for historical wrongs that were not illegal under international law at the time they occurred.β

Big-god-balls?

RINGING!

Israeli police prevented Catholic leaders from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to celebrate a private Mass on the Christian holiday of Palm Sunday for the first time in centuries, setting off a wave of criticism from the United States and others.
Jerusalemβs major holy sites, including the church, are closed because of the ongoing Iran war, as the city has come under frequent fire from Iranian missiles.
The Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem called the police decision βa manifestly unreasonable and grossly disproportionate measure.β It prevented two of the churchβs top religious leaders, including the Latin Patriarch, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, and the Custos of the Holy Land, from celebrating Palm Sunday at the place where Christians believe Jesus was crucified.
Palm Sunday commemorates Jesusβ triumphant entry into Jerusalem and launches the Holy Week commemorations for Christians which culminates in Easter.
Loud and clear,
sin, sin, sin,
all the time

Thanks for keeping us posted, Najwan, about the horrors being committed in Palestine.
Genocide and torture -- how have we gotten to the point where this is normalized.
Some good news: Avi Lewis was elected leader of the federal New Democratic Party in Canada. I cried when I listened to his acceptance speech. Here it is if you'd like some inspiration. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzrzRJGRz5A
Take good care, my friend. I hope you were able to get some sleep this weekend.
