Winter’s first heavy rainfall sent water cascading through Gaza’s sprawling Muwasi tent camp on Saturday, as the territory struggles to cope with flooding and devastated infrastructure after two years of war.
Residents attempted to dig trenches to keep the water from flooding their tents, as rain dripped through tears in tarpaulins and makeshift shelters. The intermittent bursts soaked families’ scant belongings. Strong winds can also topple tents and hamper attempts to gather scarce food and supplies.
Two weeks ago, Bassil Naggar bought a new tent on the black market for the equivalent of about $712, because the summer sun had worn his old tent thin. Still, rainwater was leaking through.
“I spent all (Friday) pushing water out of my tent,” Naggar said, adding that his neighbors’ tents and belongings were wrecked. “Water puddles are inches high, and there is no proper drainage.”
Barefoot children splashed in puddles as women made tea outside under dark clouds. Some people tried to shelter in destroyed buildings, even those at risk of collapse, with gaping holes covered by pieces of plastic.

“The Palestinian Foreign Ministry is warning people in Gaza against human trafficking networks and what it calls displacement agents. That’s after details emerge of a mysterious agency transferring people from the Gaza Strip to other countries through unofficial channels reportedly facilitated by the Israeli military.
Let’s take a look at what we know so far. A group of more than 150 Palestinians left Gaza, which requires crossing the so-called Yellow Line. That’s an area under Israeli military control that covers all crossings in and out of the Gaza Strip.
They were taken through Karam Abu Salim by bus to Ramon International Airport in southern Israel. That’s where they boarded a flight transiting through Nairobi, Kenya before landing in Johannesburg, South Africa on Thursday morning. The group was initially denied entry for not having Israeli departure stamps in their passports.
The Civil Society Coalition, which has been assisting the Palestinians, has told Al Jazeera that it’s clear an organization called Al Majed Europe is behind the transfer. It’s estimated all Palestinians on board the flight were charged between $1,500 to $5,000 to leave the Gaza Strip. We’ve also been informed that those choosing to leave were only allowed to carry their mobile phones and money and a backpack.
Now, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry has said in a statement that companies and entities that mislead our people incite them to deportation or displacement or engage in human trafficking and exploit their tragic and catastrophic humanitarian conditions will bear the legal consequences of their unlawful actions and will be subject to prosecution and accountability. The ministry urges our people, it says, especially our families in the Gaza Strip, to exercise caution and avoid falling prey to human trafficking networks, blood merchants and displacement agents. Now, aid organizations say Israel is continuing to block the supply of tents and shelter materials in Gaza, leaving thousands of families exposed to heavy rain, floods and harsh winter conditions.”

Israel is angling for a 20-year security agreement with the US with “America first” elements, US media reported on Thursday, a deal that would be broader in scope than past pacts and would last until the 100th anniversary of Israel’s independence.
The current 10-year memorandum of understanding between the two countries — the third such agreement signed — expires in 2028. Signed under the Obama administration in 2016, it includes around $4 billion of aid to Israel annually.
With growing skepticism around foreign aid, including to Israel, in the Republican Party among those who subscribe to US President Donald Trump’s largely isolationist “America First” policies, the next MOU faces challenges that the previous ones did not.
The projects touted would be in defense tech, defense-related AI, and Trump’s Golden Dome missile defense project, among others, an Israeli official told Axios.
“This is out-of-the-box thinking,” an Israeli official told Axios. “We want to change the way we handled past agreements and put more emphasis on US-Israel cooperation. The Americans like this idea.”

The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has accused Israel of deliberately crippling its operations and blocking the entry of vital aid to Gaza amid its more than two-year genocidal war, as Palestinians face the onset of heavy rains and winter with sparse shelter or relief.
“Safeguarding UNRWA’s mandate and operations is required under international law; it is vital to the survival of millions of Palestinians; and it is essential for a political solution,” UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini told the UN General Assembly Fourth Committee on Thursday, citing recent findings by the UN Commission of Inquiry and rulings by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) obligating Israel to lift restrictions on the agency.
Lazzarini also told a news conference at the UN headquarters in New York that severe funding shortfalls were threatening UNRWA’s essential services, urging donor nations for more money, so that it could continue its operations in Gaza despite funding cuts by the United States.
“We run week by week, month by month. I know that as of today, we will be able to process our salaries in November, but have no idea if or no visibility if we will be able to process our salaries in December,” said Lazzarini.
Israel has barred UNRWA from operating on its soil after baselessly accusing some of its employees of participating in the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, which triggered the war.
Israel has repeatedly accused UNRWA employees of involvement in the October 7 attack without providing proof.

The public disclosure of more than 20,000 pages of newly released documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has reignited a long-running scandal over his relationship with the rich and powerful.
Democratic politicians released three emails obtained from Epstein’s estate, saying they showed Donald Trump may have known more about Epstein’s crimes than he has publicly acknowledged.
The president’s team struck back, saying those files were cherrypicked, and Republican representatives followed up by releasing a much bigger cache of files.
Here are the key revelations so far:

Apple today announced the launch of Digital ID, a new way for users to create an ID in Apple Wallet using information from their U.S. passport, and present it with the security and privacy of iPhone or Apple Watch. At launch, Digital ID acceptance will roll out first in beta at TSA checkpoints at more than 250 airports in the U.S. for in-person identity verification during domestic travel, with additional Digital ID acceptance use cases to come in the future.
Digital ID gives more people a way to create and present an ID in Apple Wallet even if they do not have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID. Digital ID is not a replacement for a physical passport, and cannot be used for international travel and border crossing in lieu of a U.S. passport.
“With the launch of Digital ID, we’re excited to expand the ways users can store and present their identity — all with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. “Since introducing the ability to add a driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet in 2022, we’ve seen how much users love having their ID right on their devices. Digital IDs brings this secure and convenient option to even more users across the country, as they can now add an ID to Wallet using information from their U.S. passport.”

Hi Najwan,
I'm sorry to hear that you were under the weather, but glad to see you posting again today. I hope you're feeling fully recovered soon. Tis the season for colds and flu...
As I read your post, I thought about countries' obligations under international law, and thought what gives Israel the right to exist? It violates international law and then lies about it at every opportunity.
And then I thought what gives the USA the right to exist? It's the global terrorist -- funding Israel as it commits genocide and attacks neighbouring countries, killing innocent people off the coast of Venezuela and who knows what else.
If our western media supports a foreign actor, I automatically assume they're up to no good.
Those poor people in Gaza -- hungry, getting drenched in the rain, and of course Israel won't let anyone from UNRWA in. Some people believe there's been a ceasefire. What a sham!
Anyways, Najwan, take good care of yourself, my friend.
Thanks as always for your words.
