Al Jazeera English | Jul 31, 2024
Israeli Heritage minister Amihai Eliyahu is the first senior Israeli official to react to the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, in a post on the social media platform X. He says this is the right way to clean the world of this filth, no more imaginary peace agreements, no more mercy for these mortals, and he goes on to say the iron hand that will strike them is the one that will bring peace and a little comfort and strengthen our ability to live in peace.

π₯ Al Jazeera journalist and his cameraman killed in Israeli attack on Gaza
Al Jazeera English | Jul 31, 2024
Al Jazeera Arabic journalist Ismail al-Ghoul and his cameraman Rami al-Refee have been killed in an Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip. The strike on Wednesday targeted a car near the Aidia area west of Gaza City, according to initial information. This is not the first time the Israeli Army has targeted journalists - many of them, working for Al Jazeera. Journalists working in areas of conflict are protected under international humanitarian law. Israel has been accused of violating that law -- repeatedly. Palestinian journalists say Israel is trying to kill those telling the world what's happening in Gaza.

βI mean we we've been calling for greater and full access for journalists over and over again, and we've been doing so publicly and privately, but as as you know we don't you know we we don't hold the keys to uh to the Rafa Crossing, we don't control the issuance of visas. But in this conflict as in any conflict the the free and unfettered access to journalist is is vital to public information right, and we're not getting it here right, we're not getting it uh at all and those journalists who are uh able to to work in um in Gaza are doing it as we see at great great personal risks um. Our ability to protect journalists is through advocacy which we are doing uh, we we are not the ones uh who have our hands on the weapons, we do not have the ability to physically protect journalists in this conflict or in the in the Ukrainian conflict or in any other conflict where we see journalists pay the ultimate price, and that's that's the sad truth but it's the truth.β

And too todayβ¦
The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on Falastin, at Iranβs request (backed by Algeria and China), post the early dayβs dramatic strike (and by that I infer), the assassination of Hamasβs political leader, Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

Sharing some of todayβs excerpts, full text to read below (just mind those lovely brain cells)
Q And will the White House be urging restraint from Israel following this β
MR. KIRBY: Iβm β Iβm not going to talk about our diplomatic discussions with our Israeli counterparts.
We have been working hard to keep this war from escalating, just as weβve been working very hard and are today to make sure Israel has what it needs to defend itself.
tomorrow marks,
August 1st,
300th day,
violate,
moral sense,
feel betrayed,
this ugly place
Q But, you know, who is Israel supposed to negotiate with if the leader of Hamas is dead?
MR. KIRBY: Again, I canβt confirm the reports coming out of Tehran or Hamasβs statements.
We still believe thereβs a viable process. We still believe thereβs interested counterparts. And we still believe that there are meetings and discussions to be had. We wouldnβt have a team over there right now if we didnβt believe that it was possible to β to try to gather β gather together and β and push this forward.

Shukran for writing and sharing this dear Najwan. The criminals just killed the man who was negotiating peace deal with them just to prove how serious they are about peace. And then killed another voice for truth to assure everyone of their commitment to free press and freedom of speech.
