The Security Council met today on the situation in the Middle East and was briefed by Sigrid Kaag, Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza pursuant to Security Council Resolution 2720 (2023), and Jorge Moreira da Silva, Executive Director, United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

In which Israel’s Danny DeVito, colored the conversation, a further shade grayer than (ever) necessary…

“Despite the slander, the noise, the panic,” he said, Israel continues to cooperate with those agencies “who truly care about the welfare of civilians”.  But, it will not work with those who only care to harm his country, he stressed, adding that “UNRWA Gaza has become nothing more than a cartel, fostering hatred and prolonging misery in Gaza”.  Israel has documented proof of UNRWA staff involvement in the Hamas-led atrocities of 7 October 2023, he said, adding that it provided more than 100 names to the Agency’s Commissioner.  “This list is part of an ongoing process and does not yet reveal the full extent of the infiltration of UNWRA Gaza,” he said.  No meaningful discussions can take place about Gaza’s future and reconstruction, with Hamas left in control of it, he said.  Israel’s goal is to defeat Hamas, secure the return of hostages and “allow Gazans to take control of their own future”, he added.

“As of today, over 55 evacuation orders remain in effect, covering over 85 per cent of the population of Gaza. The latest evacuation order was issued in northern Gaza on Saturday. Repeated displacements are also separating families, eroding social protection systems, particularly for women and children. Despite the high surge in needs to protect women and children, multiple evacuation orders are also affecting the response and have delayed or interrupted support to people facing gender-based violence, by forcing the closure or relocations of services.

The World Food Programme (WFP) for its part says that on 14 September, which was Saturday, five out of six bakeries halted operations for 12 hours due to fuel shortages.  Four bakeries resumed operations at a reduced capacity yesterday after the Agency reallocated reserve fuel from its warehouse in the north of Gaza. One bakery remains out of business and the current fuel supply is sufficient for two more days at this limited capacity. Unless fuel is allowed into the north, all five bakeries remaining will be forced to stop.”

🔖 Anatomy of a Genocide – Report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967 to Human Rights Council – Advance unedited version (A/HRC/55/73)

Genocidal intent and practices are integral to the ideology and processes of settler-colonialism, as illustrated by the experience of Native Americans in the United States of America, the First Nations in Australia and the Herero in Namibia. Since it is the aim of settler-colonialism to acquire Indigenous land and resources, the mere existence of Indigenous Peoples poses an existential threat to settler societies. The destruction and replacement of Indigenous Peoples therefore become “unavoidable” and take place through different methods depending on the perceived threat to the settler group. Such methods include removal (forcible transfer, ethnic cleansing), movement restrictions (segregation, large-scale carceralization), mass killings (murder, disease, starvation), assimilation (cultural erasure, child removal) and birth prevention. Settler-colonialism comprises a dynamic, structural process and a confluence of acts aimed at displacing and eliminating Indigenous groups, of which genocidal annihilation represents the peak.

In a new alert, UNRWA highlighted how Gazans’ shelters have become a target for insects and rodents after more than 11 months of war – echoing deep concerns among humanitarians about the lack of basic hygiene items that have left families unprotected from communicable diseases.

Echoing those warnings, top independent rights experts meeting at UN Geneva maintained that access to clean water for Gaza’s 2.3 million people has been weaponized by Israel.
