The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire.

🔖 Israeli attack on Gaza school sheltering displaced Palestinians kills 22

Those killed include 13 children, six women, and a three-month-old baby, the Government Media Office said in a statement, adding that Israel had committed a “horrific massacre”.

At least 30 people were wounded, the ministry said, including several who suffered severe burns. Two people remain missing.

Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal noted that thousands of displaced people had sought shelter at the school.

The United Nations is hosting the Summit of the Future tomorrow and day after (22-23 September 2024), and in its prelude, convened The Summit of the Future Action Days (20-21 September 2024) at the UN Headquarters in New York.

🎥 Reforming the UN Security Council for an Equal and Sustainable Future (Side Event, Action Day 2, Summit of the Future)

The session aims at interrogating key actions and policy recommendations in line with various initiatives including the Pact for the Future, the report of the High-Level Advisory Board on Effective Multilateralism, the People's Pact for the Future and Oxfam Flagship report on 'Vetoing humanity: How powerful governments are hijacking our global peace and security.'

Russia has the most confirmed nuclear weapons, with over 5,500 nuclear warheads. The United States follows behind with 5,044 nuclear weapons, hosted in the US and 5 other nations: Turkey, Italy, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. Total nuclear warheads owned by these 2 countries alone counts for nearly 90% of nuclear weapons in the world.

Total number of warheads for North Korea and Israel is unconfirmed. However, it has been estimated that North Korea has enough fissile material to develop between 40-50 individual weapons, whilst Israel has material for up to 200, with an estimated 90 existing warheads.
