Israel still has “some surprises up our sleeves” in the fight against Iran, ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter says.

“There’s still a lot of things we can do,” Leiter tells Merit TV.

The full extent of Israel’s opening blows against Iran late last week has not yet been uncovered, he says: “We’ve pulled off a number of surprises — when the dust settles — you’re going to see some surprises on [last] Thursday night and Friday, that will make the beeper operation almost seem simple.”

Israel's first attack five days ago was under the premise of dismantling Iran's ability to develop nuclear weapons. The UN watchdog has never said there’s evidence of Tehran having a nuclear arms programme. But Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been saying Iran is “very close” to developing a nuclear weapon for 33 years.

Across Gaza today, health services are “barely available” and difficult to access, Dr Peeperkorn said, since more than 80 per cent of Gaza’s territory is under evacuation orders.

“The shrinking humanitarian space makes every health activity way more difficult than the previous day,” Dr Gargavanis added.

Nasser Medical Complex is the largest referral hospital in Gaza and the only remaining main hospital in Khan Younis. It is situated within the evacuation zone announced by the Israeli military on 12 June.

The nearby Al-Amal Hospital - operated by the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) - continues to provide services to patients already there, but it is unable to admit anyone else because of ongoing military operations.

“It is what we call a completely minimal functional hospital,” Dr Peeperkorn said.

France and Saudi Arabia were due to co-chair the conference hosted by the U.N. General Assembly in New York on June 17-20, and Macron had been among leaders scheduled to attend. The Palestinian Authority hoped the conference would revive the long-defunct peace process.

Macron expressed his “determination to recognize the state of Palestine” at some point, despite the postponement. France has pushed for a broader movement toward recognizing a Palestinian state in parallel with recognition of Israel and its right to defend itself.

After Israel’s strikes on Iran on Friday, Macron said that France’s military forces around the Middle East are ready to help protect partners in the region, including Israel, but wouldn’t take part in any attacks on Iran.
